Prof Yunus deposits Tk 537m to appeal against NBR tax claim

Nobel Laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, also Chairman of Grameen Telecom Trust, has deposited Tk 537 million to the government exchequer to appeal an income-tax claim by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) for the tax years 2011 to 2013.
The money was deposited on Sunday at Rupali Bank's Pallabi Branch in Dhaka, as confirmed by Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun, a lawyer representing Prof. Yunus.
On February 12 of this year, the High Court (HC) instructed Grameen Telecom Trust's Chairman to deposit Tk 537 million to appeal the income tax claim made by the NBR.
Despite not filing an appeal against the HC order, Prof. Yunus deposited the money.
The judgment was delivered by an HC bench consisting of Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir.
