Prof Yunus to seek permanent bail today

Nobel laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus, also the chairman of Grameen Telecom, and some other officials of the organization will appear before the Labour Appellate Tribunal in Dhaka today (Tuesday).

They will present to seek permanent bail in a labour law violation case filed by the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) in which they were sentenced to six months jail.

Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun, a counsel for Prof Yunus confirmed the matter. The lawyer further said the Appellate Tribunal may also hold hearing on the appeal filed by the accused on that day.

Earlier on March 03 this year, acting Chairman of the Labour Appellate Tribunal in Dhaka Md Abdul Awal extended bail to Prof Yunus and his three colleagues until April 16.

Consequently, the accused including Porf Yunus have to surrender before the Appellate Tribunal on Tuesday for seeking bail.

Inspector of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, Arifuzzaman, filed the case with Dhaka 3rd Labour Court on 09 September in 2021 against four people including Prof Yunus on charge of violating the labour law.

The 3rd Labour Court on January 01 this year sentenced Prof Yunus and three others to six months' imprisonment.

Judge of the 3rd Labour Court in Dhaka Sheikh Merina Sultana, delivered the verdict after concluding the trial proceedings of the case.

The other accused in the case are- Grameen Telecom Managing Director Ashraful Hassan, Directors Nurjahan Begum and Md Shahjahan. The court has also fined Tk 30,000 to each of the accused.

The labour court also granted bail to the accused on the same day on condition that they have to file appeal within one month.

Md Abdul Awal admitted their appeal petition on January 28 this year and extended their bail for different terms.
