Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has urged the government to ensure accountability in addressing the abuse of power at high level and publish a white paper on corruption.
In light of recent exposure of high-level abuse of power, corruption and political criminalisation, it is important for the government to demonstrate the credibility of its zero-tolerance stance against corruption, the TIB said in a statement on Sunday.
Referring to ‘corruption allegations’ against a former army chief and a former police chief and the killing of a member of parliament, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said, "If the government and the ruling party only offer evasive explanations out of embarrassment, it will not only be unacceptable to the people but also be suicidal for the government."
"The citizens of this country are already valid realising that the three highly publicised incidents are not isolated; they are symptomatic of deep-seated institutionalised corruption and represent just a tip of the iceberg. It is also clear that the responsibility for these crimes extend beyond those directly involved," he added.
TIB also called for establishment of short-, medium-, and long-term strategies and a roadmap to ensure good governance and check corruption, in line with the ruling party's election manifesto.
