Bangladesh may make an appeal to the international community to help it resolve the Rohingya crisis when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would address the UN General Assembly (UNGA) officials say.
She leaves today (September15) for the UK and the USA to attend the funerals of Queen Elizabeth II and participate in the 77th session of the UNGA, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said Wednesday.
She is scheduled to arrive in London on September 15 and from there to fly for New York to attend UNGA session, the foreign minister told journalists in a briefing at his ministry.
The prime minister would attend the funerals for Queen Elizabeth in London on September 19.
Sheikh Hasina would deliver her speech in the UNGA session on September 23, with a call for the international community to come forward to resolve the Rohingya crisis through kick-starting their long-stalled repatriation.
As planned, she would also urge the world community to resolve conflicts "through discussion instead of imposing sanctions against any country unilaterally".
Post-pandemic recovery, impact of Ukraine war, climate change and Palestine issue will feature her speech, the foreign minister said.
Bangladesh will organize two events on the Rohingya issue on the sidelines of the UNGA, with the prime minister attending, he informed.
Bangladesh will hold a photography exhibition on the Padma Bridge inside the UN building during the session to project its engineering wonders.
The theme of this year's UNGA debates is "A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges".
The prime minister is scheduled to attend several high-level events, including UNGA Platform of Women Leaders, to be held on September 20.
She would also attend the meeting of the 'Champions of the Global Crisis Response Group' on September 21.
The Bangladesh prime minister is one of the six Champions, the FM said.
On September 22 she would co-chair a high-level meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance. The prime minister would stay in Washington from September 25 to October 01. She is likely to meet senior politicians of the Biden administration during this time.
