Qatar will recruit 0.15 million workers from Bangladesh this year at zero migration cost to meet its demand for foreign workers, said the expatriate welfare minister on Monday.
He also said the labour receiving country has already given approval of some 50,000 visas for Bangladeshi workers, which will be sent to the country within three months.
Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment (EWOE) Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain said these at a press conference at the city's Probashi Kallyan Bhaban. The programme was organised to inform the media about his recent visit to the Arab country.
"Qatar will recruit nearly 0.15 million workers this year, and it has already approved 50,000 visas for Bangladeshis."
The minister said Qatar needs a large number of foreign workers to construct various infrastructures to host the World Cup Football 2022.
"During meeting with Qatari Labour and Social Affairs Minister Dr Abdullah Saleh Mubarak Al Khulaifi he has assured me that the cuntry has a plan to recruit a significant number of workers from Bangladesh," he mentioned.
"So workers need not spend any money to go to the middle-east country. Presently for securing jobs in Qatar they have to spend Tk 0.30 to 0.40 million each as migration cost."
He also said the Qatari recruiting companies will send their demands to the Bangladesh embassy directly, and then the government will select workers from its database. A 6-member delegation, headed by the minister visited Qatar on February 23-26.
Meanwhile, online registration for female overseas job-seekers will begin on March 5. It will be launched for Dhaka division on the day.
The online enlistment will take place at Union Information Service Centres (UISCs) and District Employment and Manpower Offices (DEMOs).
