FE Report Communications minister Obaidul Quader Tuesday ordered Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) officials to improve their services, saying he won't tolerate any graft in the key state agency. "This agency will have to revive its image at any cost," he said, adding that the people have many questions about the quality of services rendered by the BRTA. The minister visited the BRTA's Mirpur office and talked with a number of clients who were there for vehicle fitness certificates, tax payment, registration and driving licenses. The customers told the minister that they were not receiving the services in line with their expectations, pointing at unnecessary foot-dragging and willful negligence in duty. The minister took the complaints to the BRTA officials, saying that he was unhappy at their work. "Being a developing country, we may have many resource limitations. But insufficient staff and facilities cannot be an excuse for dishonesty or delay," he said. Quader directed the BRTA officials to open four more counters to speed up driving license issuance process and get rid of the "middlemen" in the BRTA activities. The communications minister inspected bank counters, biometric room, fitness certificate activities, stores, file-keeping desks at the BRTA office. He expressed dissatisfaction at the overall state of affairs. "People have a lot of grievances against BRTA. We have to come out from this image with all-out effort," the minister said, hoping that digitisation of the agency's services would remove irregularities.
