The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has called for the government to resign immediately or they would be ousted through a mass upsurge.
As part of the movement, the BNP will hold a grand rally on October 28 in Dhaka city.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, "You (the government) must quit and pave the way for holding a free, fair and participatory election under a neutral caretaker government…"
He made the call at a rally in front of the party's Nayapaltan headquarters on Wednesday.
"We (BNP) will announce fresh programmes from the grand rally until the fall of the government. Our grand journey will be started from our grand rally (October 28)," he said.
"We have to face all hurdles on the path of our movement in order to realise the rights of the people," Mr Fakhrul said in a confident tone.
Other like-minded parties of the BNP will also observe the programmes simultaneously.
BNP and its allies have long been demanding ouster of the government, holding elections under a caretaker set-up, restructuring Election Commission and release of Khaleda Zia for her treatment abroad.
Labelling the government as unconstitutional, Mr Fakhrul alleged, "They (the government) only verbally talk about the constitution. But in practice, violate the constitution.
"The government has deprived the people of their rights. The soil under the feet of the government has been moved away," he stated.
"BNP and other opponents want to see people's right to vote. Our ongoing movement is to ensure that the countrymen exercise their volition."
Mr Fakhrul said BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was yet to be allowed by the government to receive advanced medical treatment abroad despite her serious illness.
Citing seamless repression of opponents, he said the government could not suppress their ongoing movement by its brute force.
In the name of mega projects, the BNP secretary said, the ruling clique was siphoning off billions abroad.
He accused the government of resorting to new tactics for holding another farcical election by arresting BNP leaders and throwing them into jails.
He said jail terms have been awarded to 96 BNP leaders, including Aman Ullah Aman and Habibur Rahman Habib, in just a few months.
Blaming the government for not controlling commodity prices, he said people on lower and lower-middle incomes were in trouble maintaining families.
Standing committee members attended the rally chaired by Dhaka south BNP convener Abdus Salam and moderated by Dhaka north BNP member secretary Aminul Haque and acting member secretary of Dhaka south Liton Mahmud.
Thousands of party workers and supporters from different parts of the capital and different districts also participated in the rally.
