The authorities of Dhaka city developer snapped on Monday utility services to unauthorised commercial establishments in Uttara to kick-start evection drives in the capital's residential areas amid security concerns.

Officials of the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk), Titas and power departments in a combined operation disconnected utility services of five hotels and restaurants at sector No. 4 of Uttara.

They said the eviction drive will run today (Tuesday) in Gulshan area-the high-security zone where a bizarre tragedy took place in a gun attack on a café at the very start of this month.

"We will carry out the drive Tuesday at Gulshan," Chairman of Rajuk M Bazlul Karim Chaudhury told the FE Monday.

He, however, did not disclose the utility services of how many illegal businesses at Gulshan will be cut off.

Earlier on July 24, 2016, Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain said utility connections to unauthorised institutions and commercial establishments in the residential areas of the capital would be snapped.

And following the decision of the government the Rajuk has sent notices to the "illegal" business establishments, according to Rajuk.

The cabinet committee had decided on April 4, 2016 that unapproved institutions and commercial establishments must leave residential areas in the capital within six months.

Educational institutions, clinics and hospitals will get some time to remove their establishments but no time will be given to the owners of hotels, guesthouses and others. There are 215 illegal commercial establishments in Uttara zone, 500 in Mirpur, 552 in Gulshan-Baridhara, 173 in Dhanmondi-Lalbagh and 105 in Motijheel-Khilgaon areas.
