The government has decided in principle to allow export of raw jute, especially that was taken to ports for shipment before the imposition of the export ban on all kinds of raw jute on December 7 last.
The decision came at an inter-ministerial meeting, held at the secretariat Sunday with the Textile and Jute Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui in the chair, a senior official of the ministry told the FE.
Senior officials from the ministries of Textile and Jute, Commerce and Foreign Affairs were present at the meeting, he said.
"It was decided at the meeting that the raw jute that was ready for shipment at ports should be allowed for exports," said the officials.
The government is expected to issue an order to this effect shortly, the official added.
The government had put a ban on export of all grades of raw jute in line with the articles 4 and 13 of the Jute Ordinance 1962 following a supply scarcity of the fibre, faced by the domestic jute mills.
The official circular, however, said raw jute -- both in the form of 'kancha and 'pacca' bales that has already been taken to ports but is yet to been shipped -- will come under the export ban.
As a result, shipment of a significant quantity of raw jute waiting at ports remained suspended following the export ban, the sector insiders said.
