RAJSHAHI, June 6 (UNB): Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Mayor and former BNP lawmaker Mizanur Rahman Minu and two other BNP leaders were sent to jail Wednesday in an extortion case.

Sources said Minu, former general secretary of Rajshahi City BNP Shafiqul Haq Milon and vice-president of district BNP Nazrul Huda surrendered to the CMM court at 11:45 am seeking bails, but judge Janendra Nath Sarkar sent them to jail rejecting their bail prayers.  The court also asked the authorities concerned to ensure division for Minu in the jail.

Shamsul Islam, member of the governing body of Evergreen Model College at Rajpara in the city, filed the extortion case with the Rajpara Police Station on April 20 against 11 people, including Minu and the two other BNP leaders.

He alleged that Shafiqul Haq and Nazrul Huda demanded Tk 400,000 (4 lakh) from him at the behest of Minu as the college authorities started constructing a college building. "They also threatened to kill me in case of failure to give them the money," Shamsul said in his case statement.
