Re-registration of SIMs for all in three months

Posts and Telecommunications Ministry Tuesday said all the mobile phone subscribers must re-register their SIMs within three months, reports UNB.
The fresh directive came just a day after the BTRC Chairman's clarification that only the fake and flawed SIMs need to be re-registered.
The ministry also said the dealers who sell SIMs of different mobile operators also must have registration.
In a letter to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Monday, the ministry said action has to be taken in this regard.
In the letter, the ministry also said all the telecom operators have to notify its subscribers about the move through advertisements within seven days with the slogan 'Unregistered SIM is detrimental to you and the country'.
Talking to the news agency at her secretariat office, State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim said unregistered SIMs are used for terrorist acts. "Even unregistered SIMs are used in making international calls."
She said many subscribers information who had registered earlier were not verified. "Such complexities and irregularities will be removed with the re-registration," Tarana said.
The ministry said it will monitor whether the re-registration process is going on properly or there is any irregularity in it.
The Election Commission and the BTRC will sign an agreement soon so that mobile operators can have the access to the NID server to verify information about the subscribers, Tarana said.
On Monday, BTRC Chairman Sunil Kanti Bose said mobile phone subscribers who have already registered their SIMs in a proper way do not need to reregister those again.
"All the SIMs won't be registered anew. Those who have already registered their SIMs in a proper way don't need to go through the process again," he said.
