The bodies of ten individuals that were recovered from a trawler floating off the coast of Cox's Bazar have been identified primarily, according to police.
Cox's Bazar Police Superintendent Mahfuzul Islam disclosed that the bodies were identified by relatives of 14 missing fishermen who went missing in the Bay of Bengal in early April.
The identification took place on Monday at the morgue of Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital.
However, DNA samples have been collected, and identities will be confirmed after DNA tests are conducted, said the police superintendent.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police is also actively working to identify the victims, according to the police official.
On Sunday, local fishermen discovered the bodies in a boat at Nazirartek Point near the estuary of the Bankkhali River in Cox's Bazar. They subsequently informed the police as the boat came ashore.
Md Rafiqul Islam, additional superintendent of Cox's Bazar police, stated that the victims may have died at least 15-20 days ago. The bodies had decomposed to a level where their facial features were mostly unrecognisable.
In a separate development on Monday, a high-level team led by Chattogram police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Anwar Hossain visited the Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue.
