Rescuers trace sunken bus in Turag

After 25 hours of frantic search the rescuers finally traced the bus, which fell into the Turag river on Dhaka-Aricha Highway, at 12.20 pm Monday.
Two special wreckers from Savar Cantonment were working to retrieve the bus that plunged into the Turag at Salehpur near Amin Bazar with 50 passengers. Captain Nazmul Hasan, who is leading the search operation, told reporters that those wreckers can retrieve the sunken bus from 200 feet above.
The total death toll reached two, as another dead body was recovered Monday. The deceased was identified as Makbul Kazi, 35, of Rajoir upazila under Madaripur.
Meanwhile, The rescue team comprised of divers from fire brigade, army, navy and local people were conducting operation and trying to salvage the bus.
Rescuers were yet to salvage the bus until filing of this report at around 8.15 pm. They suspected that many dead bodies are trapped inside the bus. Army personnel have set up two tents to store the dead bodies.
Deputy Commander Maniruzzaman, who was leading the navy search team, said the operation could not be conducted thoroughly due to strong current of the Turag.
Two teams of 12 navy experts joined the search Monday morning with naval sound navigation, ranging equipment and scanners.
Earlier, eight of the passengers swam safely to shore after the Savar-bound bus of Baishakhi Paribahan had sunk into the Turag. Unfortunately, one of them, a third year university student, died on her way to hospital.
