The Alliance for Bangladesh Workers Safety has assured the government of paying two months' wages to the workers of any readymade garment factory, production of which will be suspended following inspection.
"The visiting Alliance Board has informed us that if any factory is required to suspend its production following its assessment, the two months' wages will be paid to its workers," Labour Secretary Mikail Shipar told the FE Tuesday.
He made the disclosure after a meeting with the Alliance Board headed by its Chairman Ellen Tauscher at his Secretariat office.
The Board also sought clarification about media reports that factories had been declared shut following inspection by the apparel retailers' groups Accord and Alliance, sources said.
Mr Shipar said they had clarified that if any factory had been found risky based on recommendations by the retailers, the official review committee would look into the suggestions before taking a final decision.
The Alliance's assurance came at a time when the issue relating to the payment of wage benefit to the workers affected by suspension of production in their factories remained unsettled.
