Bangladesh Garment Workers Unity Council (BGWUC), a platform of 10 registered trade unions, Saturday announced a ninety-day programme to realise Tk 5,000 per month as minimum wage.
The BGWUC disclosed this at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the city.
Meanwhile, the maiden meeting of the minimum wage board, formed by the government to review the wages of the garment workers, takes places today (Sunday) at its city office.
The board earlier in 2006 fixed Tk 1,662.50 as minimum monthly salary for the garment workers.
Addressing the press conference, Towhidur Rahman, a leader of the platform, said they would announce tougher plans at the end of their ninety-day programmes.
The programmes will begin on January 31 and end on April 14.
