CHATTOGRAM, Feb 03: Workers of a garment factory staged a protest and blocked a road in the port city on Monday to demand their dues.
Witnesses said hundreds of workers from "Anwara Dress Makers" sat on the Bayezid Bostami road around 9:00am, creating a severe traffic jam.
Several workers were locked in a scuffle with two pedestrians who spoke against the road barricade.
Due to the blockade programme, a four-km-long traffic jam has been created on both sides of the road.
The Industrial Police and the Chattogram Metropolitan Police rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. Later, army personnel joined them.
Senior officials of the RMG factory talked to law enforcers and gave assurance of payment, but the agitating workers did not accept it.
The protesters left the spot around 6:00pm, declaring that they would stage a protest programme again tomorrow.
The protesters also threatened to continue their street protest if the authorities do not pay their dues.
Mohammed Asadujjaman, an operator of the factory, said, "We haven't getting salary and overtime bills for the last two months."
Officer-in-Charge of Bayezid Police Station Md Arfiur Rahman said the situation is now under control.
