Unruly garment workers ransacked several factories at Mirpur in the city Tuesday following demonstration by hundreds of apparel workers of a unit demanding minimum monthly salary of Tk 5,000 and other financial benefits, the police said.
Witnesses said nearly 800 hundred workers of Opex garment at Mirpur-13 area become violent at noon and started vandalising the factory after putting road blocks.
During the protest, the infuriated workers also damaged a number of vehicles disrupting vehicular movement on the main road till 2:00pm.
The workers later vandalised 14 other nearby factories in Mirpur Industrial hub after having failed to bring out more workers from sister units to join the demonstration.
Officials of Opex blamed outsiders for the attack saying the workers did not place any demand like wage hike earlier.
"A vested quarter is hell bent to destabalise the sector," general manager of the factory Haron-ur-Rashid said.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control by charging batons to disperse the agitating workers that left seven workers injured.
