Road links of hill districts snapped

CHATTOGRAM, May 27: The road-communications network of Chattogram with its neighbouring Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Cox's Bazar districts got disrupted due to submersion of roads on Monday.
Arakan road, Hathazari and Raozan roads became flooded with driving rain and tidal waters under the influence of the cyclonic storm 'Remal'.
Rain or thundershower, accompanied by gusty or squally winds, is occurring in Chattogram and its adjoining districts without pause since Sunday.
The heavy rain is likely to continue for another day.
Most of the areas, including low-lying parts of the port city, went under knee-deep water due to heavy rainfall for hours, thereby disrupting normal activities here.
The lowlands included Bakalia, Chandgaon, Bahaddarhat, Chawkbazar, Badurtala, Nasirabad, Halishahar, Patenga, Kattali and Chaktai. According to sources, the sufferings of the residents of Chattogram, the second largest city of the country, know no bounds for waterlogging as they stay indoors.
The city's streets looked deserted, as the movement of traffic and pedestrians was negligible for the same.
The local Met office recorded 132mm rainfall from 6 to 9 am, 16.5mm rainfall 9 am to 12 pm. On the other hand, the Bay of Bengal remains very rough due to Remal.
Activities at Chittagong port, the prime seaport of the country, also remained halted. Flights to and from Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport and the movement of vehicles through Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel were also stopped for hours.
Chittagong Port Authority secretary Omar Faruk said, "Chittagong port ordered to stop the movement of goods due to Remal. We'll continue official work…"
On the other hand, small traders and wholesalers at commodity hubs Khatunganj and Chaktai suffered heavy losses as their stocks got damaged due to waterlogging.
