Rohingya couple killed in Teknaf 'gunfight' with cops

A detained Rohingya couple have been killed in a reported shootout with police in Cox's Bazar's Teknaf, reports bdnews24.com.

The incident took place in the hill area adjacent to Leda Rohingya camp in Teknaf Hnila Union on Sunday morning, according to Teknaf police station OC Pradip Kumar Das.

Police identified the dead couple as Mohammad and his wife Jaheda Begum.

They were both members of a robbery gang and have been implicated in several cases, including murder, kidnapping, robbery and drug trafficking, said OC Pradip, adding that they are absconding in these cases.

Police detained Mohammad and his wife Jaheda from Leda Rohingya camp area on Saturday night, said the OC.

Based on their confessions, police later launched a drive in the hill area adjacent to Leda Rohingya camp in the morning to capture another 'robber' named Mohammad

Shafiullah and to retrieve weapons with the miscreants in tow, he said.

"When police reached the area, the members of the robbery gang opened fire on police, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate. At one point, the robbers fled the area and the bullet-ridden bodies of Mohammad and Jaheda were found on the spot."

The couple were taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex and then transferred to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital where an emergency department doctor declared them dead, he said.
