Ryder Scott, a Houston-based energy consulting firm, revealed recently that the country's northeastern Bibiyana gas field had significantly larger gas reserves than estimated earlier.
According to the initial estimation, the field has recoverable gas reserves of 2.4 trillion cubic feet (Tcf).
The initial reserve estimation was based on the performance of only two wells.
But the Ryder Scott's assumption on higher reserves has been based on the prospect of recovery of gas from ten additional wells drilled during the field's development.
It, however, did not disclose the size of the additional reserve.
The consulting firm's latest evaluation concludes that Chevron-operated Bibiyana will experience no problem in producing gas at full capacity of more than 600 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) for a couple of decades.
Bibiyana is currently the largest gas field in Bangladesh producing around 480-520 million mmcfd of gas.
"The prospect of Bibiyana gas field is bright as it has larger reserves," said Major (retd) Md Muqtadir Ali, Petrobangla director for production-sharing contract (PSC).
He said the progress of works in the field is satisfactory and the existing gas pressure is quiet nice.
Bibiyana gas field was designed to produce 600 mmcfd and it could easily produce to that level if the current gas transmission problem of Petrobangla is solved, company sources said.
Petrobangla's existing gas pipeline infrastructure is incapable to supply more gas to the country's southern region from the gas-rich northern region.
The state-owned company, however, has taken steps to install several compressors to upgrade the gas transmission pipeline and carry sufficient gas to the southern part from the northern region, said a senior Petrobangla official.
"It is a world class gas field by any professional evaluation, which is helping the nation meet its gas needs, and will continue to do so for many years into the future," Chevron Bangladesh president Steve Wilson said Thursday.
Chevron has proven reservoir management expertise and is committed to the safe and reliable development of the Bibiyana field, he said.
The company is currently the largest among the operating international oil companies (IOCs) in Bangladesh with total gas production of around 780 mmcfd, which is about 40 per cent of the country's gross gas production of around 1760 mmcfd.
Chevron produces gas from three of its existing gas fields - Moulvibazar, Jalalabad and Bibiyana - and supplies to the national grid for consumption by industries, power plants, commercial and household uses.
