FE Report
Traders have started bringing in sacrificial animals in the city's makeshift markets much ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha festival, which begins on December 9.
The markets are scheduled to formally start operating from December 6, three days ahead of the Eid.
There are 11 makeshift cattle markets in the city along with permanent cow market at Gabtoly in the capital.
However, the cattle traders have been asking for 'unusual prices' for the animals raised locally.
The traders are now asking price for a medium size cow in the range between Tk40,000 and Tk50,000, which is around Tk 10,000 higher than the previous year at city's different markets.
While the price for a small size cow is being asked between Tk30,000 and Tk35,000, up from around Tk10,000.
The price for the large size cows ranges from Tk 60,000 to Tk90,000.
Abul Hossain, a cattle trader who brought 100 cows for selling in Dhaka from Sadarpur Upazila in Faridpur, told the FE said the prices were this year.
"This is because of high prices of fodder. It has gone up sharply compared with that of last one year," he said.
He said: "A maund of fodder now cost Tk 240 against Tk 140 previously," said Hossain, who brought his cows at the city's Golapbagh field.
Traders at Gabtoly cattle market told the FE that the prices would come down after the supply of sacrificial animals rises in the next few days.
Md Munir Ahmed, a cattle trader, said: "Actually, the sale of cows has not yet picked up. People are coming to enquire about the prices."
The DCC has approved 11 makeshift cattle markets. They are located at Jhigatala-Hajaribagh ground, Hosseni Dalan Road (from Chankarpool Chou Rasta to Bakshibazar traffic signal.
