Maulana Delwar Hossain Saydee Thursday filed a Tk 1.0 billion defamation suit against three lawyers to make them pay the penalty for filing a case of war crimes against him and 35 other top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP, reports UNB.
Apparently launching a counter-offensive, the case was filed with the third joint district judge's court against advocate Liton Miah, advocate Safayet Hossain Sajib and advocate Rajib Hossain who had sued the 36 opposition politicians.
Judge SM Saiful Islam accepted the case and, after hearing, asked the accused to appear before the court by June 17.
According to the case statement, through filing the war crime case implicating him among the 36 persons the accused "tarnished" their reputation "in national and international arena". And this loss of reputation entails a loss amounting to Tk 1.0 billion in monetary terms.
The three advocates filed a case on November 13, 2008 against 36 big shots, including Jamaat leaders Ghulam Azam, Motiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, Delwar Hossain Saydee and BNP lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, seeking to declare them war criminals for their roles in the 1971 liberation war.
