Reconditioned vehicle traders urged the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) on Wednesday to withdraw the existing 'dual registration' system, which requires an importer and a buyer to register the same car twice.
Leaders of the Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association (BARVIDA) also requested the BRTA to control import of substandard commercial vehicles in the country.
They made the demands during a meeting of the BARVIDA delegation, led by its President Abdul Haque, with the BRTA Chairman Nur Mohammad Mazumder at his office, a BARVIDA statement said.
During the meeting, the car dealers also requested the chairman to upgrade the BRTA's research and development (R&D) wing to cope with technological advancement.
The BARVIDA leaders submitted proposals to work jointly with the government agency to control road accidents and improve the transport system in Dhaka.
Besides, they praised quick delivery of the BRTA services regarding registration of vehicles and fitness.
In response, the BRTA chairman accepted the proposals, and assured the BARVIDA team of implementing those.
He also formed a sub-committee, and instructed it to work on the 'dual registration' system within the existing law.
BRTA Secretary Khandaker Aliour Rahman and its Director Azizul Islam, and BARVIDA Secretary General Mohammed Shahidul Islam and its Vice President Mohd. Saiful Islam (Samrat) attended the meeting, among others.
