A group of investors Saturday urged the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to keep the share markets closed during the month of December, arguing that such a step would help halt downward trend of share prices.
In a letter to the SEC chairman, they said fund crisis is seriously affecting the share markets, and the downward trend of the share prices places the small investors in an uncertain situation.
The SEC has announced the closure of share trading from December 5 to December 13 because of Eid-ul-Azha. Besides, the markets will also remain closed on the occasion of the Victory Day (December 16), Christmas Day (December 25) and yearly bank closing (December 31), they said.
Moreover, political instability centering the upcoming parliament election is mounting, and the situation would not improve unless a new parliament or government is formed.
They claimed that the global economic crisis forced some Asian countries to keep their share markets closed temporarily to protect the interest of investors.
If the share trading is kept closed during the month of December, it would help restrain the falling trend of share prices and the interest of the small investors will be protected, they added.
