The country's second hydrogen peroxide plant is likely to go into production from the middle of November next, which will make the country almost self-sufficient in such important industrial raw material.
Industry sources, however, said the demand for the chemical is growing every year in the country.
Samuda Chemical Industries Limited, a sister concern of the commodity conglomerate TK Group, has set up the plant on two acres of land at the Kalurghat industrial area in Chittagong.
It started the civil and other works for the plant in late 2006.
"We are expecting to go into production in November 15 next as our all civil works and installations of equipment have been completed," Mohammad Mustafa Haider, managing director of the Samuda Chemical Industries told the FE Tuesday.
Currently, the demand for the chemical is around 30,000 tonnes annually.
One HP Chemical Industries located in Narsingdi is providing only around 13,000 tonnes of the industrial chemical.
Official sources at the Samuda Industreis said that the capacity of the plant will be around 13,000 tonnes annually initially.
They also said its capacity might be raised depending on the demand for the chemical in the country.
It is used as bleaching agent in the textiles and paper industries. It is also used in eliminating toxic effects of various mines and waste water treatment plants.
The chemical is also used in sterilisation of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food packaging industries.
Managing director of the Samuda Chemical Industries told the FE that it took the move for setting up of the plant following increased demand for the chemical.
