State Minister of Home Affairs Advocate Shamsul Huq Tuku said security measures would be beefed up in the country's bordering areas to check illegal trespassing by terrorists and militants from the neighbouring countries.
The newly appointed state minister disclosed the government's latest move at his maiden meeting with top police officials at DMP (Dhaka Metropolitan Police) headquarters in the city Wednesday afternoon.
"If we can ensure foolproof security in the bordering areas, the foreign terrorists and militants will not be able to enter the country. They will also be failed to make Bangladesh as their hideouts," he said.
The minister said Bangladesh would not support any terrorists or criminals to hide inside its territory, as it's a peace-loving nation. "And this initiative will also discourage the local criminals to escape from the country after committing crimes," he added.
The decision came following the arrests of some foreign terrorists and militants in recent time forcing the government to be tougher, a DMP top official told the FE over phone.
The police arrested a number of foreign terrorists and militants in the last couple of months who admitted that they had entered the country through bordering areas dodging the eyes of law enforcing agencies.
In July last, the detectives arrested two top Lashkar-e-Taiba leaders Moulana Monsur Ali and Obaidullah who later confessed to the police that many of its members are still active in the country.
Tuku urged all the police officials to work with honesty and unitedly to improve the country's law and order situation by defying all odds and obstacles.
He also called for launching a special drive against the terrorists and militants.
