Seven more die in measles, symptoms cases

Seven more children died of measles and measles-like symptoms in the last 24 hours, as infections continued to rise, according to health authorities on Thursday.

With the latest fatalities, 23 children have died from measles in the country since March 15.

In addition, 143 more children have died with measles-like symptoms during the same period, according to the Directorate General of

Health Services (DGHS) bulletin.

Meanwhile, 642 new confirmed measles cases were reported in the past 24 hours, along with 1,187 additional cases showing measles-like symptoms.

The total number of confirmed cases has risen to 2,241, while suspected cases have reached 12,320.

A total of 8,251 measles patients have been admitted to hospitals nationwide since March 15.

Of them, 5,801 have recovered and returned home, DGHS data show.

Among the seven deaths, four children died with measles symptoms at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), reports our Rajshahi correspondent.

The deaths occurred in the hospital's measles isolation ward between Wednesday morning and Thursday morning.

However, hospital authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the deceased.

Dr Shankar Kumar Biswas, spokesperson for RMCH, said 27 new patients with measles symptoms were admitted during this period, while 24 were discharged after recovery.

Currently, 132 patients with measles symptoms are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Since the outbreak began, a total of 479 patients have been admitted to RMCH, of whom 50 have died so far, Dr Biswas added.
