Shimulia Ghat to remain functional after Padma Bridge opening: Khalid

The Shimulia Ghat (terminal) will remain operational for ferry services even after the commissioning of Padma Bridge, said State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Saturday.
He also said pompous programmes will be held on both sides of Parma River marking opening of the Padma multi-purpose bridge on June 25.
"Ferry services at Shimulia Ghat will remain functional after commissioning of Padma Bridge due to its consistent demand. Long route vehicles especially goods-laden trucks may choose the route considering the scope for taking rest inside the ferry," he told the media after visiting Shimulia Ferry Ghat in Munshiganj district.
"Our lives and livelihood are inextricably linked with the rivers. Our relationships with the rivers will continue," he said.
Mr Khalid Mahmud said communications system like roads, railways, waterways and air services is developing fast in Bangladesh and thus helped the country become a role model of development in the world.
He said that marking the opening of much-hyped Padma Bridge, pompous programmes will be held on both sides of the river Parma since it will be the biggest ever programme in the country's 50 years history as sentiment of each and every citizen of the country is related with it (Padma Bridge).
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate Padma Bridge on June 25. Following inauguration, the bridge will be open for traffic.
Chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Commodore Golam Sadeq was present, among others, according to the Ministry of Shipping.
