FE Report | September 01, 2014 00:00:00

Annual incomes of short-term international migrants are much higher at Tk 143,000 each than those of other migrants.

Besides, the incomes of international and non-migrants are Tk 83,000 and Tk 90,000 respectively per annum.

The figures were revealed Sunday by the Refugee and Migratory Movement Research Unit (RMMRU) at a function in the city's BRAC Inn centre.

The research was conducted by the RMMRU with assistance from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

The findings showed that only 13 per cent of the short-term international migration (STIM) households live below the poverty line while the figure for internal migrants is 47 per cent and that for non-migrants 40 per cent.

The study also revealed that the poverty rates were found to be lower in the case with male-headed international migrant households compared to female-headed households.

It also observed that the short-term international migrants enjoyed a better living standard compared to international migrants and non-migrants.

About 34.07 per cent of international migrants' households had savings accounts while the rate was 21.49 per cent among internal migrants and 19.11 per cent among non-migrant households, the study said.

International migration was helping reduce poverty in the rural areas, said Tasneem Siddiqui, founder-chair of RMMRU while presenting the research paper.

She also said the living standard was also better in areas of international migrants than those of non-migrants' areas.

Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman, former adviser to the caretaker government spoke as chief guest at the programme while Mustafizur Rahman, executive director (ED) of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Dr Binayak Sen, Research Director of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS), Dr Mahbub Hossain, ED of BRAC, and Dildar Hossain, project director of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), were present as discussants.
