CHITTAGONG, July 20: Six people, including five children, were killed in hill slide and wall collapse in the city's Lalkhan Bazar and Baizid Bostami areas  early Sunday.
The law-enforcers of Khulshi police station and Baizid Bostami police station filed separate murder cases in connection with the incidents, and two people were arrested by Baizid police.
Police said three children of a family died at around 2.00 am on Sunday, as part of a hill collapsed on the house of Shahjahan Mistry in Amin Colony area under Baizid thana.
Those killed in the hill collapse are Arafat Hossain Farid (12) and his sisters Umme Salma (05) and Bibi Mariam (02).
On the same night at around 1.00 am Mariam Begum (30) and her daughter Suraiya (02) and one Ankhi (05) of the same area died on the spot, as a wall collapsed at Pora Colony of Lalkhan Bazar area under Khulshi police station.
They were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where the physicians declared them dead.
Deputy assistant director of Chittagong Fire Service Md Jashim Uddin said the hill and wall collapse occurred following incessant rain on the Eid day and overnight.
Sub Inspector of Baizid Bostami police station Abdul Rahman filed a case with the police station on Monday in connection with the hill collapse. Both the accused -- Md Mohiuddin and Md Sohail -- were arrested, as they illegally raised the houses in the hill pockets.
Sub Inspector of Khulshi police station Rusel Mohammed filed another murder case in connection with the wall collapse, accusing one Md Khokan, who was absconding from Sunday morning.
As many as 200 people have been killed in hill and wall collapse incidents over the last eight years during the rainy season in Chittagong, officials at the district administration said.
They further said as many as 666 families are now residing in the risky slopes of 11 hills in the city, of which the highest 320 families are residing in Mati Jharna and Batali Hill areas, and 186 families in AK Khan Hills.
Families are also illegally residing in the hills owned by Harun Khan on south of Ispahani Hills, Baitul Aman Society hill, Koibalyadham Bishwa Colony hill, Lake City residential area hill, Akbar Shah residential area hill, Chittagong City Corporation hill near Environment Directorate, Foy's Lake Residential Area hill, Mir Hossain hill near Forest Research Institute, hill near Nasirabad Industrial Area and hill near Jalalabad Housing.
The district administration and the metropolitan police conducted several raids and removed dozens of families, cut off their electricity and water connections, and gave them temporary shelter in the nearby schools. But many of the families again hired those houses and took illegal electricity connections.
