A slump in the monsoon rains over the north and north-eastern parts of the country as well as in Indian states of Assam-Meghalaya and Tripura is likely to help the prevailing flash flood situation in the north-east improve further, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said Thursday, reports BSS.
In its forecast for the next 24 hours beginning at 6:00 am today (Friday), the centre said the Surma at Sylhet is likely to fall by 15 cm and may flow 24 cm above danger level, at Sunamganj it is likely to fall by 20 cm and may flow 19 cm above danger level.
The Kushiyara at Sheola is likely to fall by 49 cm and may flow 23 above danger level. The Brahmaputra-Jamuna at Bahadurabad is likely to rise by 21 cm and may flow 102 cm below danger level, at Sirajganj it is likely to rise by 27 cm and may flow 49 cm below danger level, at Aricha it is likely to rise by 24 cm and may flow 122 cm below danger level.
The Padma at Bhagyakul is likely to rise by 22 cm and may flow 58 cm below danger level.
The Surma at Kanaighat, Sylhet and Sunamganj and the Kushiyara at Amalshid and Sheola are flowing above their respective danger marks Thursday morning.
Most of the rivers in the Brahmaputra and the Ganges basins have been observed to rise. Most of the rivers in the Meghna basin registered fall. Out of 62 monitoring stations, 39 stations recorded rise and 19 stations fall in the water level of rivers.
