FE REPORT | February 18, 2024 00:00:00

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) Nasrul Hamid said that the government would introduce smart gas meter for gas distribution within the next four years to check gas wastage and save revenue.

He said, "The government is working to modernise energy sector and make it time-befitting."

Mr Hamid was addressing as the chief guest the inauguration of Bangabandhu Corner and prepaid gas meter project's data centre and data recovery centre at Jalalabad Gas Transmission and Distribution System Limited (JGTDSL) head office in Sylhet on Saturday.

He was on a three-day official visit to see the present oil and gas exploration activities in gas-rich northern region.

A number of multilateral donor agencies, including World Bank and Asian Development Bank, have shown interest to fund in pre-paid gas meter project, he said.

On Saturday, the state minister also inspected drilling activities of Sylhet-10 and Kailashtila-8 gas wells.

Some 21 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas could be added to the national gas grid from Kailashtila gas field by April next, Mr Hamid said.

The government is now working to add around 618 mmcfd of gas by drilling a total of 46 wells by 2025, he said.
