Four state-owned commercial banks (SoCBs) are set to start disbursement of about Tk 5.22 billion loans among tanners to help them procure rawhide and skin of sacrificial animals during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
The top management of the Sonali Bank has already approved Tk 1.22 billion for three clients.
"We've asked our branches concerned to take necessary measures for disbursement of the loans to the clients," a senior official of the Sonali Bank told the FE Tuesday.
He also said the Sonali Bank provided Tk 910 million to the same parties in 2013.
The management of the Janata Bank Limited is going to provide Tk 2.50 billion as loans against 23 parties this year for the purpose.
"We're still working on the issue," a senior official of the Janata Bank said.
He also said the bank provided Tk 2.20 billion to the same parties for the same purpose last year.
The Agrani Bank is also set to provide around Tk 1.0 billion as loans this year to three clients, a senior official of the SoCB said.
The Rupali Bank has decided to provide around Tk 500 million to four clients.
"We're now working on the disbursement of the loans to our clients for purchase of raw hides," a senior official of the Rupali Bank said.
He also said the bank disbursed around Tk 450 million to the same parties in 2013.
Only those parties, which already repaid their earlier dues, are qualified for fresh loans in line with the existing guidelines issued by the SoCBs.
Under the guidelines, those who failed to repay their previous loans will not be entitled to the fresh credit for purchase of raw hide, according to SoCB officials.
