Speaker meets UN Under-Sec Gen Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka

Bangladesh Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury called on United Nations Under-Secretary-General Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka at the latter's office in the UN Headquarters in New York, USA, reports UNB.

During the meeting, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, also Executive Director of the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, congratulated Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury for being elected the chairperson of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Executive

Committee, said a press release from the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat in the city.

Dr Shirin Sharmin said the CPA is working for the development of women's political leadership in the Commonwealth states.

Mentioning various aspects of women empowerment in Bangladesh, Dr Shirin Sharmin said women have 20 percent representation in Bangladesh Parliament.

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka praised Bangladesh for its success in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) saying that Bangladesh is a role model in achieving the MDGs.

Earlier, the Bangladesh Speaker called on another UN Under-Secretary General (Department of Field Support) Atul Khare at the UN Headquarters.
