A high-level meeting of the communication ministry was held Thursday to discuss the safety and improved transport services for large number of home-bound passengers, an official source said.
Chaired by the communication secretary Muhammad Mahbubur Rahaman, the meeting decided that the BRTA would conduct mobile courts in different routes of the city so that the private and public transport operators could not charge increased rate of fares from the passengers.
Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairmen Abu Bakar Md. Shahjahan, Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) Chairman Hedayetullah Al Mamun, Bangladesh Railway (BR) acting Director General Kazi Asad Ullah and senior officials of shipping and home ministries were present at the meeting, held at the Secretariat.
It was disclosed at the meeting that the Railway Authority would start selling advanced tickets from October 4 while passengers would be able to collect their tickets in advance from the BRTC from the 21st Ramadan.
The meeting was also told that the BRTC would operate a total of 600 buses across the country on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Of the total, over 200 buses will be plying on different routes of the country from Dhaka city alone, the official source said.
Besides, the BR will also introduce additional railway services for the home-going people.
Suspending the existing off-days, the meeting decided that all the intercity train services would be in operation on the occasion of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
The meeting, however, asked the shipping ministry to ensure that the lunch operators could not charge any additional fare from the passengers and also take steps to keep all ferries operational.
