Speakers at a discussion on Sunday called upon the government to stop excessive lifting of underground water in the capital to avert possible natural disasters caused by subsequent vacuum in land layers.
They rather emphasised taking effective steps to utilise and manage surface water from rivers, canals, ponds, rain and other sources to save Dhaka city as well as the country from natural disasters like earthquake and desertification.
Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) arranged the discussion in the city, marking the World Water Day, said a press release.
IDEB president A K M A Hamid presided over the function, addressed, among others, by its general secretary Md Shamsur Rahman and IDEB study cell's chairman M A Gofran.
The speakers also underlined the need for purifying water, used in industrial sector, saving the rivers from all kinds of pollution and dredging those to ensure navigability.
They also urged the government to make National Water Resource Council effective, and strictly enforce the water policy in the country's greater interest.
They further said the Asian countries urgently need to take an integrated action plan to face the upcoming water crisis in this region before the crisis gets intensified across the world.
The speakers also expressed their concern over 'inaction' of the governments to take an effective plan for using surface water despite IDEB's repeated calls in this connection since 1980s.
As a result, water is presently becoming unavailable even at 1,000-feet deep under the surface, creating threats of natural disasters to the capital as well as the country, they added.
