SUNAMGANJ, Apr 22 (UNB)-Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) has warned of a possible flash flood in Sunamganj due to rising water levels in major rivers, urging farmers to harvest ripened paddy without delay.
BWDB issued a press release in this regard on Wednesday.
BWDB Sunamganj Executive Engineer Mamun Hawlader said continuous rainfall in upstream areas has led to a steady increase in water levels in the Surma, Kushiyara and Baulai rivers as well as other rivers in the region.
According to the latest data from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department and the Bangladesh Water Development Board, the water levels of rivers in the northeast region, particularly in Sunamganj, may increase rapidly over the next few days, heightening the risk of flash floods.
The rainfall within haor areas may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, said the release.
To minimise potential damage to Boro crops in haors, BWDB has advised farmers to harvest paddy from fields as quickly as possible where at least 80 percent of the crop has matured.
