A man arrested in connection with the killing of Jubo Dal leader Golam Kibria in Dhaka's Pallabi has reportedly died while in the custody of the Detective Branch (DB) of police, reports bdnews24.com.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said that 40-year-old Moktar Hossain was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Friday morning. He had been taken there after officers reportedly found him unresponsive in custody.
Kibria was shot dead on Nov 17 when three masked and helmeted assailants entered a hardware shop in Pallabi's Block C and opened fire at close range. He was rushed to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead.
His wife, Sabiha Akhter Dina, later lodged a case naming five suspects, along with several unidentified individuals.
Police said three men -- Nazrul, Masum and Zaman -- were arrested in separate operations in the Shariatpur district on Nov 20.
According to investigators, the men admitted to taking part in the attack and claimed the firearms used were in the custody of Moktar.
Acting on this information, DB officers raided a garage in Pallabi on Thursday evening. Police said Moktar tried to flee but was caught with the help of local residents, some of whom assaulted him during the arrest. Officers later recovered eight rounds of ammunition from a nearby rickshaw garage based on his directions.
