Twenty-four students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), who went on a hunger strike unto death on Wednesday demanding their vice-chancellor's resignation, reportedly fell sick on Thursday.

One of them, Kajal Das, was taken to a hospital in Sylhet city around 1:30 pm, reports UNB.

The agitating students vow not to break their fast until the VC steps down.

Besides, a delegation of teachers came to the student protesters around 8:45 pm on Wednesday and requested them to break their fast.

Prof Anwarul Islam, a spokesperson for the delegation, said, "The students didn't respond to our request, rather gave us some conditions and asked us whether we support their ongoing movement."

"…We told them that we want a high-profile probe committee to look into the [attack] incident…"

Earlier, the hunger strikers also made an effigy of VC Farid Uddin Ahmed and placed it alongside various placards in front of his residence.

On Monday, they wrote an open letter to President Abdul Hamid, demanding the VC's immediate removal.

The students also rejected the notice of shutting down the university for an indefinite period and the direction to leave the dormitories.

Currently, the students are staying on the campus and locked the hall gates from inside.

SUST was to close following a clash on the campus between police and protesters on Sunday. The students were asked to leave the halls by 12 noon on Monday.

Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall provost Zafrin Ahmed was at the centre of the trouble for her reported misbehaviour with some students.

Later, she quit from her post, citing health issues.

'WITHDRAW REMARKS ABOUT JU GIRLS'

Meanwhile, a legal notice has been sent to the VC demanding withdrawal of his indecent remarks about female students of Jahangirnagar University (JU).

Khademul Islam, a Dhaka-based lawyer and also a former JU student, sent the notice on Thursday, reports the FE court correspondent.

The VC has been asked to withdraw the remarks and seek an unconditional apology over his fault within 72 hours of receiving the notice.

Otherwise, proper legal action will be taken against him, the lawyer says.

In response to the demand for keeping open all night the ladies' hall at SUST, he made insulting remarks about the JU girls, the notice says.

According to the reports published in different media outlets and audio clip spread through different social media, Prof Ahmed said, 'No one wants to marry Jahangirnagar's female students easily because they roam around all the night."

The VC's remarks were indecent, insulting and unconstitutional, and an extreme impediment to women's education, reads the notice.
