FE Report
A devastating fire broke out at Garib & Garib Sweater Factory in Gazipur Tuesday one and half months after a blaze killed 21 workers and injured hundred others.
The factory had resumed operation in the morning after a long closure due to the February 25 fire and was forced to suspend production once again following the latest blaze.
Witnesses said the fire broke out on the fourth floor of the six-storied building at about 1:15pm during lunch-break. The workers heard a big bang before the fire broke out.
The reason behind the fire could not be known immediately, however, the factory management did not rule out sabotage.
On information, firefighters from several units rushed to the spot and doused the blaze at about 2:45pm.
Vehicular movement on Dhaka-Mymensingh road was disrupted due to the fire causing a severe tailback for an hour.
About 0.25 million pieces of sweaters and 500 machines were gutted in the fire at Bhogra on the industrial belt, factory management said.
Officer-in-charge of Joydevpur police station Abdur Rashid said no one was hurt in the blaze as most of the workers were away for lunch.
