Sylhet city, Habiganj mayors suspended

The Local Government Division suspended Wednesday Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury and Habiganj Municipality mayor GK Gaus over their suspected link with the former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria murder.

"Since the court accepted his name in the charge sheet of a criminal case, he (Ariful Haque) has been suspended following the Local Government (City Corporation) Act," additional secretary of the Local Government Division Ashok Madhav Roy told UNB.

On December 30, a Habiganj court sent SCC mayor and BNP central leader Ariful Haque Chowdhury to jail, rejecting his bail prayers in the Kibria murder case.

Earlier on December 21, the court accepted the supplementary charge sheet filed against 35 people, including Ariful Haque, by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Police in connection with the killing of five people, including Shah AMS Kibria.
