FE REPORT | January 27, 2025 00:00:00

Business leaders should concentrate on taking the opportunity of improved business climate created by the present government, said Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief adviser, on Sunday.

He made the remarks at a press briefing when asked to comment on the business leaders' plea to hold the general elections as soon as possible.

In response to another question, Mr Alam said that closure of the RMG units has not hampered the export growth.

He alleged that rich business leaders, who were supported by previous regime, own most of these closed factories, who either in jail or fled the country.

He also alleged that the business leaders have plundered banks and siphoned millions of dollars leaving the workers unpaid.

He called former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal "a butcher" who "ordered indiscriminate killing of students, children, workers and innocent people during the July Revolution."

"Providing shelter to such butcher is not at all acceptable," he also said.

About the recent visit of the CA to Switzerland's Davos, he mentioned that the CA held meeting with top business firms of the world at the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2025 and the firms shown huge interest in investing in Bangladesh.

He also said that the government is serious to improve the port management in the country to lure more foreign investors and to improve the business climate.

Replying to a question on the rumours in the social media saying that the advisers of the interim government including the CA fled the country, he said, "These rumours are being spread by the elements of the previous regime who already fled the country."

He informed that the government is planning to hold an international conference on Rohingya issue in September in Dhaka.

He said the CA during his meeting with top world leaders sought their assistance for repatriation of laundered money.
