Commerce minister Faruk Khan has said Bangladesh Tariff Commission (BTC) is being renamed Trade Commission with a target to improve its work capacity.
He said the government is considering renaming the commission to help the country get guidelines for improving both internal and external trade.
The minister was addressing the newly appointed research officials at the BTC's conference room after a training programme on Sunday.
He said the government has focused on the issue of 'abolishing' the present commission to ensure support for the trade related issues. These include identifying the reasons behind an unstable market, unusual price hikes and trade gaps with different countries.
The commerce minister said, for this a lot of scope has been created to do researches and called upon the trained officials to contribute to different aspects of trade.
He said the country now has trade imbalances and stressed the contribution of the commission to finding out ways of overcoming this adverse situation.
BTC chairman Dr Mojibur Rahman presided over the meeting, at which commission members Wasiuddin Ahmed, joint chief Dr Mostafa Abid Khan and newly appointed research officials spoke.
