Amid sugar prices edging up in the local market, the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has raised its subsidised sugar rates by Tk 10 per kg as part of the initiative to sell essential items to around 10 million cardholder families.
The state-run entity has set the sugar price at Tk 70 per kg, an increase from Tk 60 per kg, to lessen the government's subsidy burden. However, an official of the corporation said this will intensify the mounting price pressure on the poor and marginal communities further.
This new price is expected to take effect from today (Sunday), the first day of a month-long subsidised essential commodity sales to around 10 million low-income families, according to a TCB press statement.
The state-run agency will distribute essential commodities such as sugar, soybean oil, and lentils in different parts of the country through its dealers and at various locations in major cities.
Soybean oil, sugar, and lentils will be available at Tk 110, Tk 70, and Tk 70 per kilogram, respectively, at the sale points, according to a TCB source.
