TCB starts selling Indian onions at Tk 40/kg today

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) starts selling Indian onions at Tk 40 per kg today (Tuesday).

The essential commodity is expected to be available at 103 TCB sales points in Dhaka, 55 points in Chattogram and 17-20 points in Gazipur.

State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu is scheduled to launch the sales drive at a programme at the TCB Bhaban at Karwan Bazar in the city.

A total of 1,650 tonnes of onions has already arrived in the country from India.

TCB Spokesperson Humayun Kabir said the imported onion will be available at most of the sales points from Tuesday. However, it may not be possible to sell the onions from several points, but the consumers will get it from all points Wednesday onwards, he added

Each of the TCB trucks will have at least 10 tonnes of onions, he said.

Currently, the item is being sold at Tk 50-55 per kg in the local markets.

In the last couple of weeks, onions were sold at Tk 90-130 a kg respectively.

Earlier, the commerce ministry has taken an initiative to import 50,000 tonnes of onions under government-to-government arrangement.
