The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will start selling onion at Tk 35 per kg among the cardholders from today (Monday), taking lean period of the key essential into account.
Each of the cardholder will be able to purchase a maximum of two kilogrammes (kgs) of onion under the sales drive, said a TCB press release on Sunday.
It, however, said the supply of onion will be made available for the sales drive based on the arrival of the imported onion in the country.
The TCB's open market sale of onion is set to begin in the backdrop of the prevailing soaring prices of onion in the domestic market mainly due to its off season supply shortage, according to market sources.
Imported onion was selling between Tk 80 and Tk 90 per kg while the prices of local varieties were Tk 95 to Tk 100 a kg at the retail levels.
