Malaysia issue

Tensions flare among BAIRA members

FE REPORT | June 11, 2024 00:00:00

Tensions arose among the members of the Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA) at its annual general meeting on Monday over the issue of manpower migration to Malaysia.

At least 10 BAIRA members of the executive committee, led by the current senior vice-president Reaz-ul-Islam, boycotted the AGM on allegation of harassment.

After the boycott, they held a press conference in the afternoon to protest their harassment.

The recruiters demanded dismantling all syndicates currently at play from the overseas employment sector and equal opportunities for all the licensees.

They said those involved in irregularities by the syndicates in sending manpower to Malaysia have to be brought under legal action.

According to the aggrieved BAIRA members, a significant number of workers were unable to go to Malaysia following a host of anomalies and corruption.

These issues in recent times led to the closure of the vibrant labour market and ruining the reputation of Bangladesh.

As they spoke about these issues, BAIRA leaders they insulted them, thus creating chaos, they said.

On the other hand, the BAIRA in a statement said the 33rd AGM started peacefully on time with its president Mohammed Abul Basher in the chair.

But at one stage of the meeting, disagreements arose among a section of members.

"In such a situation, when the BAIRA president asked to stay in the scheduled discussion, some members started shouting and walked out of the meeting intentionally."

However, the meeting continued and ended amicably, it also said.
