The ministry of commerce (MoC) has extended the tenure of the present board of directors (BoDs) of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) by three months following the request of the apex trade body.
The tenure of the present board of directors was scheduled to expire on November 28 this year. It has now been extended to February 28 next year. The tenure of the apex trade body's board of directors is two years. An election for FBCCI BoDs is expected to be held early next year.
"We have given the approval for three months' time extension of the present board of directors of the FBCCI in response to their application," a joint secretary of the department of trade organisation (DTO) under the MoC told the FE.
He said the FBCCI had sought six months' time to the MoC last week for the tenure of the BoDs of the FBCCI.
After considering their appeal we have decided to grant three months' time as per the ordinance of the trade bodies. And the FBCCI has been urged to arrange the election within the extended timeframe, he said.
The BoDs of the apex trade body could not function smoothly for seven to eight months mainly due to political turmoil last year.
Meanwhile, the present board of directors of the FBCCI has taken initiatives for constructing a multistoried building of its own at Hatkhola in the capital. And there has been progress of the construction work of the building.
"We hope we will be able to complete construction work of some floors of the building within the next three months," FBCCI Vice President Md Helal Uddin told the FE Wednesday.
