SYLHET, July 29 (UNB): BNP Chairperson's adviser Hannan Shah today (Sunday) warned that those who were taking unilateral decisions for the party's reforms would be expelled if they do not correct themselves immediately.
"Those who are taking unilateral decisions for the party's reforms will have to correct themselves. If they don't do so immediately, a proposal will be put forward to expel them from the party. And the expulsion process will be completed before the next council," he said in an informal view-exchange meeting with Sylhet BNP leaders and workers at a local hotel.
Sylhet BMA general secretary Shahriar Hossain Chowdhury, district Jubo Dal president MA Mannan and Kamal Ahmed were, among others, present at the meeting that lasted for about 20 minutes.
Saying that the percentage of 'reformists' is below 20, Hannan Shah said, "A handful of leaders has made the reform proposals and now they're in a process of sending those to the grassroots level. Their activities are against the party constitution as the Chairperson must be informed of any taken decision."
Replying to a volley of queries from the workers, he said, "Initially, the Chairperson broke down…Now she is moving forward with a special strategy. Everything will be alright in time."
Earlier, speaking to reporters at the Dargah gate of Hajrat Shahjalal (R), the Chairperson's adviser said the party remains united and the council would be held when indoor politics resumes.
About the party's reformist secretary general who put forward reform proposals virtually excluding Khaleda from the leadership, he said, "Mannan Bhuiyan is working with a misguided perception. In order to get rid of this perception they will have to perform 'tauba' (repent).
bdnews24.com adds: A dissident BNP leader Sunday said most BNP councilors favoured the proposed reforms rolled out by the secretary general.
"I don't think Brig Gen (retired) ASM Hannan Shah was right when he claimed that not even one-fifth of the BNP councillors want any reforms," BNP chairperson's adviser retired major general ZA Khan said.
Shah Thursday said party 'reformists' commanded the support of no more than 5.0 per cent of councillors. "Their claim comes from their imagination. They will not succeed if they try to move according to these plans," Shah had said.
"I think 60 per cent of councillors are in favour of the move and would like to see better democratic practices within the party instead," Khan said to reporters after meeting BNP secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan at his Gulshan home.
Bhuiyan had recently proposed to limit the tenure of party chairperson and secretary general to a maximum of six years.
