TIB demands judicial probe into breach of polls code

Expressing its deep concern over violence and alleged violation of electoral code of conduct in the 11th parliamentary election, Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) has demanded judicial probe into these incidents.

Question had been raised regarding the election and its results as some incidents of violation of electoral code and use of force were reported, it said in a statement on Monday.

Citing media reports, the anti-graft watchdog said violence claimed 19 lives so far and left dozens of others injured.

Dr Iftekharuzzaman, the executive director of TIB, called for "taking necessary steps to investigate the incidents of alleged violence, use of force and violations of electoral code in the 11th parliamentary election. "It raised doubt over the credibility of the polls."

He added: "We have been demanding a level playing field for all political parties in the 11th general election. But local and international media cited incidents of harassment, arrest and lawsuit against opposition candidates which are ominous sign for democracy. Even such alleged incidents happened before and after the election."

So, people might lose their confidence in the system of democracy, he said in the statement.

"The way the chief election commissioner brushed aside the allegations of barring polling agents of a political alliance is embarrassing as well as deepening the concern as to whether the election commission performed their constitutional duty and responsibility properly," Dr Iftekhar said.

The judicial inquiry is needed to ensure the self-confidence, dignity and credibility of a new government which is going to be formed, the executive director of TIB mentioned.
